In addition to building new housing, the department of housing and environment maintains streets, parks and sewage systems, cleans homeowners' chimneys, and ensures that there are adequate bus and taxi facilities. It is also in charge of urban planning, managing environmentally sensitive areas and disposing of waste in an environmentally friendly manner.
